WPATH assessments
The psychologists at Vivid Psychology are dedicated to creating a safe space for gender-diverse clients.
We provide WPATH assessments for those (over the age of 18) – seeking Gender Affirming Medical and/or Surgical Treatment (GAMST) – gender affirming hormones and surgery. The purpose of a WPATH assessment is to support individuals to make informed decisions regarding their healthcare and treatment and to assist them to achieve their goals in an informed and safe way. It is important for individuals seeking WPATH assessments to know that we are not looking for a particular narrative, as we recognize that there is no single correct way to transition.
What is involved? The assessment is a collaborative, interview style discussion, conducted over at least 3 sessions. The number of sessions required will be determined as the assessment progresses and the complexity of issues discussed. Just some of the areas we explore are your experiences of gender dysphoria, the history of your gender development and current gender identity and its impact, as well as your readiness and understanding to commence gender affirming interventions.
Once the assessment is complete, your clinician will write a report to whichever medical professional is supporting you in your gender affirmation (e.g., a GP, endocrinologist, or surgeon). Generally, reports are valid for three months (please check with your medical professional as to their required time frame).
The WPATH assessments are delivered in line with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care version 8.
Assessment sessions are $280.00 for a 50-minute session. With a GP referral and valid mental health care plan a rebate of $141.85 is available for each session. The cost for the report is $350 (plus GST). Medicare does not provide a rebate for reports.
